Presented by Denise Bruno

Take a tour of metadata and taxonomies. We'll progress through the basics to more advanced topics and by the end of the workshop discover how the two are inter-related. Emphasis will be placed on how metadata and taxonomies are used within records management but we'll also go through best practices, tips and tricks, and documentation that can be applied to any project or application involving metadata and taxonomies. Included will be practical exercises highlighting concepts and techniques. By the end, you'll leave with a greater understanding and appreciation of metadata and taxonomies - as well as a burning passion for both!

Denise Bruno is the Records and Information Audit/Compliance Officer with The Regional Municipality of York in Ontario, Canada. She is a librarian with more than 20 years experience in records and information management. She started her career in research, primarily with the Royal Bank of Canada. Moving to consulting, she designed taxonomies and metadata for efficient information retrieval. As an associate of CONDAR Consulting, she developed records policies, classification schemes, retention schedules and conducted user training. One of her most thrilling experiences was assisting Library and Archives Canada in developing a records management metadata standard and application profile for use across the Government of Canada. Denise has a Bachelor of Business Administration from York University and a Master of Library Science from University of Toronto.
